You can&#8217;t repeat the past.&#8217; Gatsby famously responds, &#8220;Canandapos;t repeat the past? &#8230; Why of course you can.&#8221; One part of the past that seems to get endlessly repeated is &#8220;The Great Gatsby&#8221; itself; if it isn&#8217;t the great American novel, it&#8217;s difficult to know what is.
